The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts, founded November 16, 2011, located in Rochester, New Hampshire, United States, is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization, exhibiting a vast collection of works by emerging and seasoned artists. The museum opened in March 2012. The permanent collection includes outstanding examples of contemporary works donated by artists from around the world. This wide range of art, featuring over 150 works, encompasses a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, digital prints, and works on paper.
Locations
The museum has no central location. Instead, the RMFA utilizes public spaces in order to make fine art freely easily accessible to the community. The permanent collection is located in the Rochester City Hall, Rochester Public Library, Somersworth Public Library, and the Goodwin Library in Farmington, New Hampshire.
Carnegie Gallery
The Carnegie Gallery, at the historic Rochester Public Library, features borrowed works on a bi-monthly basis. Each exhibit is free and open to the public. Past exhibits have featured regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists like Bob Gruen, Susan Kare, Eric Carle, and selections from the Picasso Estate Collection.
Film series
The Rochester MFA began exhibiting films in September, 2013. Each year, the museum invites the public to the historic Rochester Opera House to screen independent movies in an informal way. The series is designed to bring people together in a relaxed environment, through the love of film.
The Rochester Opera House is a magnificent theatre with stunning architectural details, a horseshoe balcony, grand proscenium, intricate stenciling, and near-perfect acoustics. The theatre is equipped with a unique mechanism that raises the auditorium floor at an incline for amphitheater seating or levels the floor for dancing. It is the only known moving floor in the world.
